Confucius Institute Chinese New Year Competition
Howes were runners up in the Confucius Institute Chinese New Year Competition. Year 6 created a Chinese dog and dog masks. They learnt a song in Mandarin to welcome in the Chinese New Year. Thanks to Finham Park School for their support.
Year 6 Racing Day – Runners up for portfolio
Earlier in the year teams from Year 6 entered the Advanced Propulsion Centre’s Greenpower Competition.
They had to create designs to answer the question “How do you think we will travel in 2050?” They all had brilliant ideas.
We were delighted to find out that one of our teams won the competition. The prize was a Greenpower electric car kit. The children have been working hard with engineers from Warwick University to construct their car and last week they had the opportunity to race their car in the Greenpower school championships in Staffordshire.
Our team called themselves The Dark Knights and had to prepare a portfolio for their big race. We were really pleased that The Dark Knights were runners up for their amazing portfolio!

Howes are Catch the Robots Bug competition winners!
We are thrilled to find out that we are the overall winners of the 1851 Royal Commission’s Catch the Robots Bug competition, which was organised in partnership with the Big Ideas Company.
The judges were enormously impressed by the enthusiasm and excellent standard of work produced by every school which made it an incredibly difficult competition to judge. They said that Howes Primary School’s entries were outstanding and they very much enjoyed viewing them.
Our Year 6 children loved this competition and were really inspired. They impressed us with their creativity. They truly caught the robots bug!

Howes are County PE and Sport Premium Award winners for deaf tennis!
We are delighted to have been successful in the Physical Activity and Health Enhancing Initiatives in the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Primary PE and School Sport Awards for our deaf tennis club.
David Moorcroft OBE, Chair of Coventry Sports Network, presented the award to members of the tennis club in a school assembly on 22 June. Our school will now go on to the regional PE awards.
At the presentation of the award, he said: “This is a fantastic achievement by the school and all the children that took part in the deaf tennis club, not only the children that participated, but also the children who became sports leaders and helped to run the club. It’s wonderful that through this club the children developed a love of tennis and more and more children are being introduced to sport, gaining a lifelong love of being active.”

Viking Theme Day – Year 3 and 4
Year 3 and 4 had lots of fun on their Viking Day! They made many things that the Vikings made themselves, such as candles, rune stones, thumb pots as well as their own medicine (which they discovered were really smelly!). In the afternoon, they became archaeologists and dug up some ancient artefacts. Overall, it was a really great day!

Year 5 Trip to Safeside
This week Year 5 visited Safeside in Birmingham. Safeside brought PSHE to life through life-like scenarios such as a road crossing, bus, train, canal, car, house, alleyway, food store and street scene. In the morning, the children split into groups and took part in two different workshops. The first covered road safety issues and included simulations to show the effect of no seatbelts and an opportunity to use speed guns outside Safeside. The fastest car we caught was over 45mph in a 30mph zone! The second workshop took place on a double decker bus and inside the Travel Information Centre. It covered the skills needed for using public transport safely, and journey planning with an emphasis on reducing car use. The aim was to give children the skills and confidence to be more independent and keep themselves safe.
In the afternoon, the children took part in an interactive, practical two-hour tour. They learnt to recognise key dangers and understand how to reduce risk to themselves and others. The favourite part for most of the children seemed to be going into the Safeside alleyway in the dark and being scared by the dark shadowy figures inside! The experience did however have very serious messages about how to stay safe.

Easter at Howes 2017
Our decorate an Easter egg competition carried on this year. Eggs were decorated in any style and there were some fantastic entries. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were given out for each class and everyone that entered the competition received a small chocolate by way of a thank you for taking part.
