Year 6 Racing Day – Runners up for portfolio
Earlier in the year teams from Year 6 entered the Advanced Propulsion Centre’s Greenpower Competition.
They had to create designs to answer the question “How do you think we will travel in 2050?” They all had brilliant ideas.
We were delighted to find out that one of our teams won the competition. The prize was a Greenpower electric car kit. The children have been working hard with engineers from Warwick University to construct their car and last week they had the opportunity to race their car in the Greenpower school championships in Staffordshire.
Our team called themselves The Dark Knights and had to prepare a portfolio for their big race. We were really pleased that The Dark Knights were runners up for their amazing portfolio!

Howes are Catch the Robots Bug competition winners!
We are thrilled to find out that we are the overall winners of the 1851 Royal Commission’s Catch the Robots Bug competition, which was organised in partnership with the Big Ideas Company.
The judges were enormously impressed by the enthusiasm and excellent standard of work produced by every school which made it an incredibly difficult competition to judge. They said that Howes Primary School’s entries were outstanding and they very much enjoyed viewing them.
Our Year 6 children loved this competition and were really inspired. They impressed us with their creativity. They truly caught the robots bug!

Howes are County PE and Sport Premium Award winners for deaf tennis!
We are delighted to have been successful in the Physical Activity and Health Enhancing Initiatives in the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Primary PE and School Sport Awards for our deaf tennis club.
David Moorcroft OBE, Chair of Coventry Sports Network, presented the award to members of the tennis club in a school assembly on 22 June. Our school will now go on to the regional PE awards.
At the presentation of the award, he said: “This is a fantastic achievement by the school and all the children that took part in the deaf tennis club, not only the children that participated, but also the children who became sports leaders and helped to run the club. It’s wonderful that through this club the children developed a love of tennis and more and more children are being introduced to sport, gaining a lifelong love of being active.”

Viking Theme Day – Year 3 and 4
Year 3 and 4 had lots of fun on their Viking Day! They made many things that the Vikings made themselves, such as candles, rune stones, thumb pots as well as their own medicine (which they discovered were really smelly!). In the afternoon, they became archaeologists and dug up some ancient artefacts. Overall, it was a really great day!

RHS Spring Festival, Malvern
We were delighted to be invited by the Royal Horticultural Society and BAM Construction to the RHS Spring Festival at Malvern on 12th May. Our Year 5 outdoor learning leaders went on this visit and were accompanied by Mr Watson and Mrs Townsend. They had the opportunity to visit the show gardens and to attend the award ceremony for the Schools’ Gardens competition. The visit has given them lots of ideas for the current land use topic in Year 5 and 6. They have also been inspired to enter the RHS schools’ competition at Malvern next year.

The Big Sale, written by Coragh & Hannah, Year 6
As an end-of-year water slide party was going to be very expensive, Year 6 decided to raise money to pay for it. All Year 6 pupils were invited to contribute their ideas. We finally agreed to hold a ‘Big Sale’ after school. Although we had many brilliant ideas, we eventually agreed on: cakes, scones, brownies, cards, raffle, bracelets and face painting.
After a tiring week of doing SATs, we were relieved to get started on the exciting event ahead of us. The tasks were allocated to the pupils who were split into groups of four to six children. It seemed as busy as a factory as everyone worked tirelessly to achieve their goal.
Having set up our stalls in the hall, we waited anxiously for customers. What if nobody came? Fortunately we had nothing to worry about. When the bell rang, children and parents swarmed into the hall and eagerly bought everything in sight.
On Monday the money was counted. Can you guess how much we raised? An amazing £177.36!
Well done to our Year 6 and a big thank you to everyone who supported us.

Year 5 Trip to Safeside
This week Year 5 visited Safeside in Birmingham. Safeside brought PSHE to life through life-like scenarios such as a road crossing, bus, train, canal, car, house, alleyway, food store and street scene. In the morning, the children split into groups and took part in two different workshops. The first covered road safety issues and included simulations to show the effect of no seatbelts and an opportunity to use speed guns outside Safeside. The fastest car we caught was over 45mph in a 30mph zone! The second workshop took place on a double decker bus and inside the Travel Information Centre. It covered the skills needed for using public transport safely, and journey planning with an emphasis on reducing car use. The aim was to give children the skills and confidence to be more independent and keep themselves safe.
In the afternoon, the children took part in an interactive, practical two-hour tour. They learnt to recognise key dangers and understand how to reduce risk to themselves and others. The favourite part for most of the children seemed to be going into the Safeside alleyway in the dark and being scared by the dark shadowy figures inside! The experience did however have very serious messages about how to stay safe.

Success for Howes in the CSW Primary PE and Sport Premium Awards
Having applied for the CSW Primary PE and Sport Premium Awards, we are delighted to announce that we have been successful in the category of Physical Activity and Health Enhancing Initiatives.
The awards recognise schools that have innovated and endeavoured to provide outcomes for pupils using the Primary PE and Sport Premium grant.
The judges were extremely impressed with our application which showed the impact of the funding on our pupils engagement in physical activity. We are very excited to now represent Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sport in round two, the regional awards, where we will be up against winners from the other five West Midlands County Sports Partnerships (Active Black Country, Sport across Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT), Sport Birmingham, Sports Partnership Herefordshire Worcestershire and Energize (Shropshire)). We hope to hear the outcome of this very soon.
Representatives from Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sport will be coming into school soon to present us with our trophy in assembly.

Greece Visit
In April, pupils from Year 5 and 6 visited our partner school in Patras, Greece as part of our Erasmus+ FIND project. They worked with staff and pupils from our partner schools in Malta, Italy, Poland, Norway and Greece. The focus of the work was robotics and engineering. We were very proud of our pupils as they presented their robotics work at an international conference in Greece. The team also visited the Acropolis in Athens and Ancient Olympia. They had special permission to visit the International Olympic Academy and learn more about the Olympic philosophy. Staff and pupils had a fantastic week and have come back to Howes ready to lead some exciting robotics workshops for all classes.

Easter at Howes 2017
Our decorate an Easter egg competition carried on this year. Eggs were decorated in any style and there were some fantastic entries. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were given out for each class and everyone that entered the competition received a small chocolate by way of a thank you for taking part.
