Welcome to Howes Community Primary School.
Thank you for visiting our school website and, on behalf of our whole school community, I would like to warmly welcome you to Howes Community Primary School – a place where every child is known, valued and inspired to be the best they can be.
At Howes, we believe that every child deserves the greatest opportunity to succeed, not only academically, but as a happy, confident and compassionate individual. Our aim is to nurture a lifelong love of learning within a caring, inclusive and ambitious community where every child feels safe, supported and challenged to reach their full potential.
We are incredibly proud of our school. Although we are often described as Coventry’s hidden gem, there is nothing hidden about the warmth, ambition and sense of belonging that visitors experience as soon as they walk through our doors. We are a small, friendly school of approximately 200 children, from Nursery through to Year 6, and this enables us to know our children and families exceptionally well. Relationships are at the heart of everything we do and children, staff, families and our wider community are all part of the Howes family.
Our children are quite simply amazing. They are enthusiastic about their learning, demonstrate positive attitudes and beautiful manners, and bring an incredible energy and zest to school life. Visitors regularly comment on the friendly, welcoming atmosphere throughout the school and the wonderful relationships between our children and adults. We want every child to feel that they belong at Howes and to know that every child can shine.
Our curriculum is broad, ambitious and carefully designed to provide children with the knowledge, skills and memorable experiences they need to thrive both now and in the future. From our youngest children in Nursery through to Year 6, we encourage curiosity, creativity, resilience and independence. Children are given opportunities to revisit and embed their learning, make connections and develop the strong foundations that will prepare them successfully for the next stage of their educational journey.
Learning at Howes extends far beyond the classroom. We are fortunate to have extensive outdoor space which is used for sport, Forest School, outdoor learning and play. As an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, we recognise the enormous value of high-quality play in developing children’s creativity, independence, problem-solving, relationships and wellbeing. Being outdoors, exploring and learning through experiences are an important part of life at Howes.
Our school environment reflects our belief that learning should inspire curiosity and imagination. Our bright and welcoming corridors continue the children’s learning beyond their classrooms, taking them through the Hamlet of Howes, including our magical woodland library – a very special place where we hope to inspire a lifelong love of reading.
We are particularly proud to be a diverse and inclusive school where every child matters. We celebrate individuality and ensure that children receive the support, encouragement and opportunities they need to achieve success. Our Hearing Resource Base is an important part of our inclusive community, supporting children with significant hearing loss while enabling them, wherever possible, to be fully immersed in school life. Our commitment to a total communication approach also means that British Sign Language is part of life at Howes, helping our children and staff to communicate with and learn alongside our deaf friends.
Alongside academic achievement, we place great importance on children’s wellbeing, personal development and character. Our values of Friendship, Respect, Integrity, Equality, Nurture and Determination are not simply words displayed around our school; they are values that we want our children and adults to live out every day. Through these, we prepare our children to become responsible, respectful and compassionate members of their communities, equipped with the confidence and resilience to embrace the opportunities and challenges of an ever-changing world.
Our dedicated staff are passionate about providing the very best for every child. Pastoral care is an important part of our whole-school approach and this includes working with external professionals and services to support children and families when needed. We even have an additional member of the team – Roux, our school dog mentor, who supports children’s learning, wellbeing and emotional regulation and is a much-loved member of the Howes family.
